Nate's Rearset plates. Review by Tom Monroe

I converted my standard SV650 to use Clipons. With the more aggressive riding position, I found that I felt a little too "bent over" on long rides.

The solution that Suzuki uses on the SV650S (which comes stock with clipons) are rearsets that put the pegs approximately 1" further back, and 1" up from the "standard" position.

With the price of Rearsets being somewhat prohibitive, I found that Nate Maillet Manufactures plates that move the pegs up 1" and back 1". At $55.00 its significantly cheaper than any other options I found.

I sent Nate a money order, and within about a week, my kit arrived.

The kit includes the plates, stainless steel bolts, nuts, and lock washers, and a shifter link extender.

The kit includes all the parts needed to perform the modification. The instructions are brief, but the modification is very simple, so they seemed completely adequate.

The plates are 1/4" thick machined Aluminum.

The plates are well manufactured, and seem to be very strong. I wouldn't expect any problems from flexing or breakage. These plates are probably stronger than the stock rearset.

Installation is pretty simple, you just unbolt the rearsets, bolt them to the plates, then bolt the plates to the bike.

Here's the left side installed with the linkage extender (circled in red).

On the right side, you'll need to shorten the brake light spring up after the rearset is reinstalled. I had to shorten mine about 1/4". Its a simple matter of bending the top of the spring until it is the desired length.

Here's a picture of the brake light spring from a different angle, and installed (I've highlighted the spring by drawing a red line around it). With no pressure on the brake lever, the spring should just be taut. This will cause the brake light to illuminate only when pressure is applied to the lever.

So far the only drawback is the 1" gap where the chain is now exposed. Probably not a problem unless your shoelaces are too long...

Conclusions:

The installation took me about 15 minutes. Its probably faster to install them than it is to read this review, and it could be undone cleanly in about that much time.

It only took me about 5 minutes of riding to get used to the new position. I've found it a lot easier on my back with the pegs in the "S" position. Its amazing how much of a difference 1" back and 1" up makes.

If you're going to put clipons on your SV, these plates are a must (unless you want to fork over $200 for a new set of rearsets.) These plates make your pegs match the aggressive riding position that clipons offer. Also theoretically, these will increase your ability to turn, because you get an extra inch of ground clearance before you scrape the pegs.

I've been on several all day rides since I've installed them, and they have worked out perfectly.
